Union all and materialized view

My Materialized view contains two sub queries . Both the sub queries when run alone runs within seconds.But when union all is applied over ,the query is running for 2.5 hrs. One sub query is very simple and the other one contains aggregate functions in it. When i comment the aggregate function the query runs very fast. why this happens and what are the things to be looked for
