How does Youtube's android app handle playback?

On Android, in the past Adbobe flash player was used to handle the playback of YouTube videos if am not mistaken. Now with the drop of flash player support by Google and Adobe not developing it anymore, how does the current YouTube app for android work? Is it HTML5 based?

Does anyone know if it supports hardware acceleration like use GPU for decoding? Because it seems it me the current YouTube app doesn't have hardware acceleration. The battery consumption is just too high even on WiFi. I loose about 1% for every 2 mins on Youtube app regardless if am watching a 360p or 720p video stream.

But when I try playing back a stored 720p MP4 video I only loose 1% for every 5 mins. That's a big difference. The video player is course hardware accelerated.

I do remember in the past watching videos YouTube on the resulted only 1% for every 3-4 mins. Now it has gotten worse and it's not down to 720p or 360p as the loss is pretty much the same.

I am guessing YouTube on android now is not hardware accelerated anymore?
