Should I copy code from another package?

I am working on a package that depends on a single function from another package. Is it ok to copy the exact code of that function to my own package in order to avoid this dependency ?

Should I mention the original author, and if so, how ?

Note: In general I wouldn't mind the dependency, but the package in question is not popular, and while it's on CRAN at the moment, I'm not sure that it will stay forever.
