How To Properly Request API?

I'm having an image gallery project. The servers are working for months now, so the mobile app. Now, I'm creating the website. I'm using latest expressjs module.

Question

Should I expose API?

If yes, what kind of API should I expose, and what kind that should I cover?

If not, how do I cover API? Requesting API server-side should affect load time. And I'm not certain about it. But, I don't know how to cover API client side.

Searching doesn't yield me satisfying results, as it tells me I can't cover API if you don't do it server side.
