socket pipeline request - select() vs setsockopt()

I am trying to implement pipeline request. I am looking on the man page and thinking that select() or setsockopt() would be my choices. However, I can't certain the differences between those two and which will be a better option for this implementation? I am currently using setsockopt(), but I still want to understand more about those two so that I can make a better judgment.
