I know there are many proponents of both schools (plain C vs C++) and I do not want to replicate the usual flame war.
But I'd like to know: given a good C++11 compiler that can, for example, leverage hints like "final", what are the big penalties still affecting an OS written in C++?
I'm not interested, in this case, to considerations like "it's harder", as it's subjective. What I'm after, is the objective penalties introduced by C++ - assuming that the code is well written and leverages all the opportunities available to save size and reduce overhead.
