How to get a job as a javascript developer without prior work experience

Background: I'm self taught and work in content development (writing), and have no exposure to software development in the workplace. I've been learning javascript over the last six months (I have a good grasp of HTML and CSS already) and am starting to learn backbone (via video tutorials and books) and node (via video tutorials and books). (Let's leave the "What frameworks should I learn?" out of the discussion, if possible.)

Does anyone have some advice for me re: a good way to become qualified for and land a job as a javascript developer? I'm planning a couple practice projects and will get started building them, but I have no idea if that's something potential employers want to see. If it is, what kind of projects will they actually want to see?

I'm in uncharted waters here. I know learning the language, popular frameworks, and programming concepts is essential - but without any prior work experience what else should I be doing?
