New improvements in sql

Hello fellow programmers, so few years ago I was creating PHP sites with sql data base, but it has been a few years since I stopped, but recently I decided to go back to PHP. But then I looked to my code and improvement in sql I realized that I know nothing about sql, it is all new with all that PDO and mysqli and everything I just don't know where to start, so if someone could give a good link there I could look up all thats new in sql I would be grateful. Thanks :)
