different onpopstate behaviour in google chrome desktop and android version

Just yesterday the line location.hash = 'whatever' fired window.onpopstate event handler in google chrome in android. Today it does not do that anymore.

The line of code still works in google chrome desktop version, android's native browser. My whole history management stoped working in a webapp properly.
