Automated testing of surfaces (layout) using screenshots

currently I´m engaged with testing the surface of a web application. The different websites of the application should be tested automated. This should be configurable. The test should work in different browsers and different versions of that.

So I could imagine to make a screenshot of all required sites and compare them automated. If a certain threshold is exceeded and the screenshots deviates too much from a reference then a developer should be informed.

Does anyone have any experience in this area and can recommend frameworks, libraries and so on for the automated creation of screenshots and algorithms for the comparison? Perhaps there is also an overview of such algorithms (with information what image formats are practical and so on).
