How to detect key press on OS X?

I am writing an app and I need to detect the keys that the use presses. Using - keyDown: I can read most keys (alphanumeric, F keys, arrows, space bar, escape, return), but I cannot get any modifier key when pressed alone.

How do I detect absolutely any keystroke, including modifier keys?
