is there a way to choose which side we are positioning against in css..if no will there be?

When position something like let's say relative or absolute. You define how much from left or right and up or down it should move away or closer. But it's always from one side by default.

Right side for left and vice versa. Similarly, top side for top.

To bypass that sometimes only solution that i have found is javascript based.

So is there a way to choose which side you want to measure it in css, or will there be in newer version of css.

I can use negative margin but that doesn't help when div's width is dynamic.
