Login control not working when changin Login username

I'm using an asp.net login control and ran into a strange problem with it. If I change the Login username behind the scenes (assume username and password are valid) it doesn't login or create the session.

Does any one know what the login control is doing in this case? After Membership.validate user it just goes to loggedin. What happens in between there?
