Block The IP-Adres in htaccess

Simple i want to disable the IP to open up my website so i have made a file called .htaccess i placed this file into my apache2 public folder named html now in the file i placed the following lines

order allow,deny deny from the.ip.adres allow from all

ALSO tried <Limit GET> order allow,deny deny from the.ip.adres allow from all </Limit>

With both had no success what is it that i'm doing wrong ?
