automatically 'fade' images behind text in wordpress frontpage

I am buiding a wordpress site that has text over images (as posts) on a single page site. On Single pages the text is black on white background with the image above so no problems there but on the front page the text is white over the image (as individual backgrounds) and is hard to read. What I need is a way of fading the images automatically so that the text stands out more but the image can still be seen. Is there CSS to do this?, or a function or plugin?
