ember private routes only allow access through ember transition

I have some special routes that I want to safeguard and keep private and redirect to these routes when needed. These are very specific error pages that I don't to be link-able i.e. (no url should be able to access these). They can only be accessed when a specific set of things is done by the user.

When I use transitionTo('my_route') the route changes but so does the URL. How can I trigger a change in route internally in ember without updating the URL?
