Get the degree of sharpness for a set of pixels

I need a classification of the pixels by their 'IN' or 'OUT OF' FOCUS level in one image in order to have a representation of the depth of field of a photograph. I wonder which tool I could use to select groups of pixels in an image, depending of their sharpness (or other property in my case ?). I know that Sobel can show the Highest frequencies on an image, but my goal is to show different groups of pixels in the image, in terms of sharpness/focusing level.
