How do I delete splunk data/indexes

Can anyone give me step-by-step instructions on how to delete data/indexes from splunk? I have no programming background, but can follow directions well if given step by step from literally the beginning. Most often when I try following instructions from places like here:http://ift.tt/1sF7oQp i go to my terminal, try to follow the instructions and usually end up with a "file not found" or "command not found" error
