Security newbie here... I'm looking to harden several production installations of SQL Server 2012. I understand that as a security best practice, it is better to use Named Pipes instead of TCP\IP to connect to SQL Server.
However, when using TCP\IP, one can choose any port one desires, other than the default 1433. When using Named Pipes, one is restricted to port 445, since Named Pipes work over SMB, and as far as I know, SMB is hard coded to work on port 445 (I could not find any articles online about changing SMB to work with another port).
Wouldn't that make TCP\IP a better security solution than Named Pipes?
