How can I adapt the Elbow method to the hierarchical algorithms in R?

I performed a hierarchical cluster analysis by using the method "ward". I created the cluster tree (dendrogram), but I need to determine the optimal number of clusters. Thus I want to adapt the Elbow method to the cluster tree in R, but I don't know how to implement it in R. My purpose is it to create a diagram of the Elbow criteria.
