How can I automatically animate each colour change?

How can I set my background colour to automatically animate from the old value to the new value on change?

What I want to happen is to set the new background colour and have the property change event be the impetuous for the animation to start (the duration for the animation can be the same each time).

Additionally I want to be able to change the colour multiple times and have it update from the currently displayed colour to the newly set colour each time.
