Quickbooks integration in a rails application

I am new to Quickbooks. I looked at the integrations that they support and i have a few questions.

• What is the difference between Quickbooks online, desktop, sdk etc?


• What is the best way to integrate quickbooks in a rails application for retrieving customers data, creating/sending invoice for them etc.?


• I saw a lot of posts about Quickbooks being hosted on Mac/Windows etc.

  • Does it have to be hosted somewhere locally so that the data is not centrally managed and thereby no security issues?
  
  
  • I was thinking it to be more of a managing account where you enter all the information and for you to access that information programmatically, you get a auth token that can be used for programmatic queries. I am not sure though. Please correct me if i am wrong and also provide the right answer.
  
  
  
  


• I looked at the ruby gem for quickbooks http://ift.tt/1jrtgLD, what are the conditions in which this can be used?
