How to add -1 to a hexadecimal using another hexadecimal?

Okay, so I have a Hexadecimal number 41, and I want to add -1 to the number using another 8-bit hexadecimal, so the result will be 40. I've tried adding FF to 41, and I ended up with FE. Any idea how I accomplish this?
