Is there a way to adapt the 960px grid to different screen sizes?

I'm wanting to use a grid system for a website, however, I want it to be responsive for larger and smaller screen sizes than 960px. What's the best way to go about it?

Do I design the website based on the 960px grid and go from there? Or are there other grids to use for different screen sizes?

I'm also thinking about going mobile first. Not sure if that would make much difference at all?
