change format of number from number to thousands with php

How to change any number from 1 to 10000000 into K format For Example i want to change :

1433323 = 1433 , 1232 = 1 , 987 = 0 and 34434 = 34 ...

i want to skip the number after result 
from 0-999 would = to 0
from 1000-1999 would = to 1
from 2000-2999 would = to 2
from 1000000-1000999 would = to 1000

and so on . How can i do this using PHP ?
