are there any client-side markup converters that write to the DOM rather than to text HTML?

seems that writing the the DOM is first, much more secure and second, requires a lot less pre- and post-processing.

I realize that, currently, browsers are much faster rendering HTML than the DOM. but philosophically I find writing to the DOM much more satisfying.
