Performing account sync but not requiring a password for the account

I want to allow the user to add an account to their device to manage the synchronisation with a sync adapter. From what I've found on the android development website a username and password should be used to authenticate the account before it is added. However, I do not need to do this as it is not connecting to any specific service that needs to be authenticated I just want the account to be added so Android can manage the synchronisation and then I can choose how to authenticate based on what API to use based on the type of synchronisation the user enabled.
