MasterPage + UpdatePanel Async Loading UserControls

I need to somehow load UserControls into an UpdatePanel within a MasterPage as the below image shows. The idea is, click on a Menu link and a different UserControl is loaded.

This site uses ASP.net Membership and various users can be logged in. I'm able to load the UserControl using an async method on one of the Menu items. No problem. However, the UserControl acts as if the user is not logged in and returns its generic state.

Bottom line is I'm looking for a good way to do this. Theory, a tutorial, good reading, whatever it may be. This seems to have increased the complexity of my site ten fold, I'm just looking to dial things back and keep it simple. Any words of advice?
