Menu bar in Glade 3.8 not showing up

So I'm creating a GUI for gtk2 in Glade 3.8.0 on Ubuntu. I started creating the layout and clicked the menu bar icon and placed it in my window. The window turned grey and the menu bar came up in the heirarchy view on the right of the screen, but was none of the menu headers were visible in the actual GUI preview. I opened the GUI via my Python code to see if that made a difference but it didn't. Also, when I open the exact same file in Glade 3.16, the menu bar is at the top as it should be.

Please help.
