Pattern recognition in grid. How to search for the similar pattern in grid but rotated and scaled?

I have just started learning about pattern recognition. I have an image (grid out of which I can make an image) in which I can recognize one specific pattern. What I need is to find patterns in image similar to the specified one. So far, using cross correlation method between subImage and Image, I succeeded to find similar patterns. But I don’t know how to search for similar patterns which are rotated or scaled relative to specified one. Do you have some suggestions for this or should I change the approach to problem completely (referring to cross correlation)? I am using Matlab to solve this problem.
