what is the relationship between core instance and mapper or called map slot for amazon EMR

I am new to this field, after reading some documents, I am confused about the relationship between core instance and mappers each instance could have, and how are these mappers created; and if I set core instance to 0, so that only master node is running, why MapReduce can still run without any task node?
